About the course:

Our Upper Intermediate level classes are ideal for those learners who have attended our Beginner, Improver and Intermediate level classes, or who meet the required standard as a result of previous learning. The Upper Intermediate level is run for a full academic year and you will maximise your learning experience if you attend all lessons over three terms. At this level we expect that you are able to work outside of class time to consolidate your learning as this helps you make rapid and sustained progress. You are supported by experienced Tutors, many of whom are native speakers, they will stretch and challenge you to exceed your targets on an ongoing basis. You will enjoy the learning experience working alongside motivated peers in a supportive learning environment. Flexible learning hours of 60 - 90 hours

How will the course be delivered?

Some classes are delivered face to face in a classroom environment. Classes are also delivered online, this means you can learn from the comfort of your own home, or anywhere you can connect to the internet. Adult Learning uses Zoom to deliver blended learning. Your Tutor sends an invitation to join the class each week which ensures that you learn in a safe and supportive environment. We will review our delivery methods throughout the year so we can respond to learner preferences.
*This is an online course delivered using Zoom, in real time with live interaction with your tutor and fellow learners. Learners will join the class from home and be able to exchange and interact with other learners as they would in the classroom (speaking and listening). Learners will be required to turn on their camera throughout the session for safeguarding compliance. There will be a discussion and demonstration. You will have opportunities to discuss and ask questions- this is an interactive course with the Tutor present throughout.

What do I need to bring?

You will need a pen and note book for all classes, a bi-lingual dictionary would also be very useful. If you are part of a blended learning class then you will need a stable and reliable internet connection and a device that allows you to connect to this, such as a laptop or tablet ( smart mobile `phones are not suitable). It is recommended that you have a quiet area of your home to work from so you get the best learning experience. The tutor will advise you if there is anything specific that you need to join our languages classes.

What are the entry requirements?

Our Upper Intermediate classes are ideal for learners who have progressed through our Beginner, Improver and Intermediate courses. We also welcome new learners who meet the entry requirements through previous study. You will have an initial assessment to ensure that this is the right course level for you to succeed.

What can I do next?

Why don't you try another language in our offering? We have a range of languages to develop your linguistic ability. Alternatively we have an exciting mix of classes available across several curriculum areas. Talk to your tutor for information, advice and guidance.

How well am I doing?

You will agree targets for yourself and your group with the Tutor. You will receive regular verbal and written feedback so you can judge how well you are progressing. You will also have a Individual Progress Record, this will allow you to review your progress with your tutor at regular intervals and give you an opportunity to add new challenges.

Additional transferable skills:

Independent study skills – as you work outside of the classroom to improve your knowledge and skills. Patience – absolutely essential, it takes time, effort and lots of repetition and practice. • Cultural understanding – learning more about other countries, their customs and their way of life. • Coaching & mentoring skills – You will develop these as you work alongside and support your peers. Your knowledge of grammatical norms in English and your additional language will be enhanced through comparing and contrasting rules and norms. • Empathy and the ability to relate to others – You will build relationships with your peers and understand their challenges in learning another language. As you develop a greater understanding of other countries and cultures you will be able to identify similarities and differences with the way you live.
