About the course:
Functional Skills Maths L1 is is designed to equip you with the skills you need to operate confidently, effectively and independently in education, work and everyday life.
The course will help to develop your skills in:
1. Basic mathematical operations
2. Fractions, decimals and percentages
3. Ratio and proportion
4. Calculating with time and timetables
5. Measuring in metric units
6. Calculating perimeter and area
7. Reading/drawing charts
8. Calculating averages and
9. Calculating probabilities
Homework is given where appropriate and you are expected to attend every week. You will have access to computer resources to support and develop your learning.
This course is suitable for you
1. You would like to progress towards L2 FS Maths.
2. You are seeking employment or career
3. You would like to know more about maths skills used in everyday life. 4. You would like to be able to help your children with their maths school homework.
How will the course be delivered?
The course will be delivered over 54 hours, usually over 18 weeks (one 3 hr session per week).
The sessions will take the form of presentations, question and answers, discussion and group and paired activities, in an informal environment. These are supported with material from work books, websites and test practice questions. This course may be delivered face-to-face or online, via Zoom, but face-to-face is preferred for this level.
What do I need to bring?
Protractor, Pair of compasses, Pen, pencils, ruler, eraser, notebook and folder
What are the entry requirements?
Completion of initial and diagnostic assessments to check what level you are working at and evidence of any previous functional skills passes eg. Functional Skills Maths Entry 3. It is also preferable that your level of English is at least one level higher the level of maths you plan to take.
What can I do next?
You could progress to Functional Skills Maths L2 (preceded by small group learning if necessary to bridge the gap) or GCSE Maths or alternatively you could do Functional Skills English.
How well am I doing?
You will be assessed throughout the course and regular feedback given on your progress.
