About the course:
Unit 1 summary:
In this unit learners will begin by looking at what constitutes a healthy diet, including energy sources and energy balance. They will then look at the food groups that make up a healthy diet in more detail and the role different nutrients play in health. Finally, they will look at planning a healthy meal, including different cooking methods.
Unit 2 summary:
In this unit learners will look at the nutritional requirements for children from one to teenage years. They will then look at the nutritional requirements for adults and older adults, including common diet related problems. Next they will look at different specialist diets including religious diets, vegetarianism, gluten-free and diabetic friendly diets. Finally they will cover the barriers to healthy eating.
Unit 3 summary:
Learners will begin this unit by learning more about food labelling, including reference intake and food label regulations. They will then look at food additives and the benefits of these as well as concerns relating to additives. Finally they will look at nutritional guidelines for diet.
Unit 4 summary:
In this unit learners will look at the risks associated with ineffective weight management, ranging from malnourishment to obesity. They will look at how body image factors into this before looking at lifestyle choices to help manage weight, and common myths about weight loss. Finally they will look at how to set sustainable goals and plan a weight management programme.
Unit 5 summary:
This unit focuses on eating disorders. Learners will look at what the different terms mean including anorexia, bulimia and binge-eating, then focus on the causes of eating disorders. They will look at how an eating disorder affects the individual and others around them, and ways to manage an eating disorder.
Unit 6 summary:
In this unit learners will learn about food safety. They will begin by looking at food safety hazards and how to store, prepare, cook, and reheat food safely. They will look at the importance of proper hand washing, storing food safely, how to keep a food work area clean, checking food is cooked to the correct temperature and factors to consider when disposing of food waste.
