About the course:

This course focuses on developing your knowledge and understanding of working with a sewing pattern to create a simple garment sewn together on your sewing machine. You will start with flat cloth and apply your pattern pieces, learning to read a pattern and its markings. You will construct the clothing piece following the pattern instructions, learning by doing with the tutor’s guidance and support, and demonstrations.

You will attend the weekly sessions in our pop-up sewing studio, bringing along your own sewing machine, so you build confidence in sewing construction and your own machine. On completion of the course, you will have made a simple item of clothing working at your own pace with the support and guidance of your tutor. We aim to complete a simple garment within the six weeks in the studio time, so you are fully supported; you work at your own pace. If you are feeling confident, you can progress at home and gain tutor feedback in the following session. Further direction will be given should you gain your sewing confidence quickly; your tutor will support you to develop additional enhancement details you can experiment with. This course is part of a sustainable textile series. It develops your understanding of mending or altering knitwear.

How will the course be delivered?

This course will be delivered by our highly experienced textiles tutor Claire Trelfa, face to face in a pop-up studio space with tutor guidance. Teaching will use examples, demonstrations and supported hands-on experience.

What do I need to bring?

Your own sewing machine; a simple sewing pattern of your choice (alternatively one will be available to work with); fabric cotton or cotton blends are easiest to work with. You are encouraged to bring along old textiles that can be re purposed: duvet covers give you large amounts of fabrics or several old shirts which we will up cycle using your pattern. Any worries about selecting fabric or pattern, please just attend the first session and your tutor will give you guidance.

What are the entry requirements?

None: this is a beginners level course

What can I do next?

You can complete further Beginners textile skills courses for learning to use your sewing machine, making an up cycled bag. And other sustainable textile courses with Adult Learning for mending and altering clothing or knitwear.

How well am I doing?

Your tutor will tell you how you are doing in the session and your progress will be recorded in your Individual Progress Record. You will work with your tutor to identify any particular areas that you want to improve and your tutor will support you achieve your goals. There will be ongoing reflective practice through your own garment construction from a pattern.
