About the course

You will be introduced to the basics of map reading, including how to read symbols, understand contour lines, and recognize hazards. You will then move on to learning how to use a compass, including how to set a bearing, follow a bearing, and take a compass bearing. There will be discussion regarding hazard identification – terrain, weather, and incidents. By the end of the course, you will be able to: Understand the different features of a map and how to use them to plan a route . Use a compass to determine direction of travel . Be aware of the hazards of mountain terrain.

What you'll need to bring

Notepad and pen. 1:25000 map Ordnance Survey Lake District sheets four North West and five North East and a small Silva compass.
