About the course:
Our Intermediate level classes are ideal for those learners who have attended our Beginner and Improver level classes, or who meet the required standard as a result of previous learning. The Intermediate level is run for a full academic year and you will maximise your learning experience if you attend all lessons over three terms. At this level we hope that you are able to work outside of class time to consolidate your learning as this helps you make rapid progress. You are supported by experienced Tutors, many of whom are native speakers, they will stretch and challenge you to exceed your targets on an ongoing basis. You will enjoy the learning experience working alongside motivated peers in a supportive learning environment. Flexible learning hours of 60 - 90 hoursHow will the course be delivered?
Some classes are delivered face to face in a classroom environment. Classes are also delivered online, this means you can learn from the comfort of your own home, or anywhere you can connect to the internet. Adult Learning uses Zoom to deliver blended learning. Your Tutor sends an invitation to join the class each week which ensures that you learn in a safe and supportive environment. We will review our delivery methods throughout the year so we can respond to learner preferences.
*Your class is delivered online using Zoom which means you can learn from the comfort of your own home. Your Tutor will send an invitation to join the class each week. This will be by email on a secure link. The class is delivered in real time. To get the most from your online lessons, we ask you to follow these ten guidelines: (1) If you are not working from home, use a location where it is safe to connect. (2) It is better to join your class using a laptop or a tablet. We may be able to help by loaning a laptop if you do not have one. Ask your centre for details. Mobile phone screens are not big enough to read shared documents and it is harder to move between the activities, so we do not recommend using one for a class. (3) Find a suitable quiet space, have access to a desk or table, have resources such as paper and pen to hand to support your learning. (4) Be prompt – we aim to start and finish on time. (5) Please be aware of what your tutor and peers can see. Ideally blur your background or use one of the standard, freely available, backgrounds on Zoom. If you require support with this, please don’t hesitate to speak to your Tutor. (6) Please dress appropriately and do not share inappropriate websites or materials. (7) Turn your camera on at all times. This is a safeguarding requirement and being able to see each other’s faces and reactions will help you to get to know each other and work as a group. It will also help your tutor see if anyone doesn’t understand. (8) Please try to minimise any background noise. Mute your microphone if it is noisy at your end of the connection and avoid interrupting other people. (9) Engage with the learning activities and your tutor and peers. You will enjoy the class more and increase your learning if you are fully involved and open to the challenge. If you do not understand something, please let your tutor know either by saying something or by private message on Zoom. (10) If you are completing a qualification that is assessed through a multiple-choice final assessment, please be aware that the assessment must be completed at one of our Cumbria Adult Learning Centres.
What do I need to bring?
You will need a pen and note book for all classes, a bi-lingual dictionary would also be very useful. If you are part of a blended learning class then you will need a stable and reliable internet connection and a device that allows you to connect to this, such as a laptop or tablet ( smart mobile `phones are not suitable). It is recommended that you have a quiet area of your home to work from so you get the best learning experience. The tutor will advise you if there is anything specific that you need to join our languages classes.
What are the entry requirements?
Our Intermediate level classes are suitable for those who have attended Beginner & Improver level courses, or who meet the entry requirements. You will have an initial assessment to make sure this is the right course and level for you to succeed.
What can I do next?
If you want to further enhance your linguistic skills we offer progression to German Upper Intermediate level, this course is delivered over a full academic year.
How well am I doing?
You will agree targets for yourself and your group with the Tutor. You will receive regular verbal and written feedback so you can judge how well you are progressing. You will also have a Individual Progress Record, this will allow you to review your progress with your tutor at regular intervals and give you an opportunity to add new challenges.
Additional transferable skills:
Independent study skills – as you work outside of the classroom to improve your knowledge and skills. Patience – absolutely essential, it takes time, effort and lots of repetition and practice. • Cultural understanding – learning more about other countries, their customs and their way of life. • Coaching & mentoring skills – You will develop these as you work alongside and support your peers. Your knowledge of grammatical norms in English and your additional language will be enhanced through comparing and contrasting rules and norms. • Empathy and the ability to relate to others – You will build relationships with your peers and understand their challenges in learning another language. As you develop a greater understanding of other countries and cultures you will be able to identify similarities and differences with the way you live.
