About the course:

The Ascentis ESOL Skills for Life qualifications are based on the National Standards for Adult Literacy and are closely related to the ESOL Core Curriculum. They are designed specifically for people living in Britain and focus on preparing you, the learner, for the world of work or citizenship. The primary aim of the Ascentis ESOL Skills for Life qualifications is to assist you to become independent of others (such as interpreters or translators; be they professionals, family or friends) when interacting with native English-speakers, both in a work environment and elsewhere. By improving your communication and fluency in English, you will significantly improve your employability skills. This class allows you to improve your skills and knowledge with expert support and guidance from one of our highly skilled ESOL tutors. This qualification allows you to progress in work and life and can open opportunities to progress within the ESOL Skills for life Curriculum offer and our other curricula.

How will the course be delivered?

Your tutor will use a variety of teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles to ensure you achieve your full potential. This course will be taught in a relaxed and informal atmosphere, where your individual needs are catered for. Teaching, learning and assessment are carried out through formally taught sessions, discussion, and group work, supported with worksheets, role-play, activity cards, games, practise papers, homework, evaluation and feedback. You must be able to complete work outside of class time and access to a laptop or tablet would be useful.
*Your class is delivered online using Zoom which means you can learn from the comfort of your own home. Your Tutor will send an invitation to join the class each week. This will be by email on a secure link. The class is delivered in real time. To get the most from your online lessons, we ask you to follow these ten guidelines: (1) If you are not working from home, use a location where it is safe to connect. (2) It is better to join your class using a laptop or a tablet. We may be able to help by loaning a laptop if you do not have one. Ask your centre for details. Mobile phone screens are not big enough to read shared documents and it is harder to move between the activities, so we do not recommend using one for a class. (3) Find a suitable quiet space, have access to a desk or table, have resources such as paper and pen to hand to support your learning. (4) Be prompt – we aim to start and finish on time. (5) Please be aware of what your tutor and peers can see. Ideally blur your background or use one of the standard, freely available, backgrounds on Zoom. If you require support with this, please don’t hesitate to speak to your Tutor. (6) Please dress appropriately and do not share inappropriate websites or materials. (7) Turn your camera on at all times. This is a safeguarding requirement and being able to see each other’s faces and reactions will help you to get to know each other and work as a group. It will also help your tutor see if anyone doesn’t understand. (8) Please try to minimise any background noise. Mute your microphone if it is noisy at your end of the connection and avoid interrupting other people. (9) Engage with the learning activities and your tutor and peers. You will enjoy the class more and increase your learning if you are fully involved and open to the challenge. If you do not understand something, please let your tutor know either by saying something or by private message on Zoom. (10) If you are completing a qualification that is assessed through a multiple-choice final assessment, please be aware that the assessment must be completed at one of our Cumbria Adult Learning Centres.

What do I need to bring?

Pen, Notepad and Folder

What are the entry requirements?

No previous formal qualifications are required for entry to these qualifications at Level 1. Before you can enrol, you will need to have an initial assessment to make sure the course is suitable for you. You can contact your centre to arrange for this to take place. If you already study with us, your current tutor can help you. Please make sure you can attend classes regularly, every class if you can, because this gives you the best chance of succeeding and improving your English skills.

What can I do next?

This course will get you on the next step towards ESOL L2 Skills for Life qualifications. This suite of qualifications is available at Entry levels 1, 2, 3 and Level 1 and 2. Learners may progress through the levels from their starting point

How well am I doing?

You will receive regular written and verbal feedback from the tutor to support your learning journey and work with your tutor to develop an individual progress record. You will be supported to set targets so you can keep track of your achievements. Formal assessments on each unit of study are provided by the awarding body; these are then scheduled according to need. They are marked by the tutor and graded pass or fail. The results are then verified by an internal quality assurer and an external verifier.

Additional transferable skills:

You will further improve your teamworking skills by working with your peers. You will also develop independent study skills as you complete work outside of the classroom. Your time management skills will also be enhanced. Your self confidence will increase as your skills level improves.
