About the course:
Unit 1 summary:
In this unit, learners will learn about the types of autism and signs and indicators of the condition. They will learn about the triad/dyad of impairments and the importance of receiving a professional diagnosis of autism, including the challenges individuals may face to gaining this diagnosis.
Unit 2 summary:
In this unit, learners will look at the legislation and guidance relevant to autism including the Autism Act 2009, Human Rights Act 1998 and legislation relevant to Special Education Needs (SEN). They will look at ways to support autistic individuals to access healthcare, employment and other opportunities and autism identification theories.
Unit 3 summary:
In Unit 3 learners will examine how autism affects cognitive processes, such as the concept of time, sensory processes and acceptance of change. They will also look at its effects on physical experiences and behaviour, as well as the effects of society and the physical environment on an autistic person.
Unit 4 summary:
In the final unit learners will look at the different aspects of best practice in relation to supporting autistic individuals, including communication needs and styles, how to manage sensory overload, how to de-escalate situations, how to support individuals in relation to tasks and diet and how to support individuals to protect themselves from abuse and harm.
