About the course
This engaging Art Appreciation course invites learners to explore the powerful role of colour and light in visual art across different periods, styles, and cultures. Through looking closely at paintings and other artworks, you will discover how artists use colour relationships, contrast, tone, and light to influence mood, focus attention, and convey atmosphere or emotion. Over the course, you will examine key ideas such as warm and cool colour, light and shadow, symbolism of colour, and the effects of natural versus artificial light. Artworks from a range of movements and artists will be used as discussion starters, helping you to see how approaches to colour and light have changed over time and how these choices affect the viewer’s experience. Sessions are discussion-based and accessible, with no prior art knowledge required. Learners are encouraged to share observations, ask questions, and build confidence in expressing personal responses to art. The course is suitable both for those with a general interest in art and for practising artists who wish to deepen their understanding and inform their own creative work.
